2024 Ruth Richardson Scholarship

Description:
Since its founding on Howard University’s campus in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been committed to community service and scholarship. The Dayton Alumnae Chapter will offer a $1,000 scholarship in the name of one of our most illustrious sorority sisters, Ruth Flowers Richardson.

Soror Richardson was a teacher and counselor for Dayton Public Schools before becoming the Associate Director of Guidance and Counseling for the district. She was inspired to create the Dayton-Montgomery County Scholarship Program (DMCSP) after the elimination of social security benefits many parents depended on to fund the post-secondary studies of their children. With the guidance of community leader John E. Moore, she launched DMSCP with an original fund of $25,000. The fund that Soror Richardson established grew to award more than $13.7 million in scholarships to over 13,000 students. The program is now managed by the Dayton Foundation.

In addition to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Soror Richardson’s memberships included Altrusa International, The Dayton Foundation, Kentucky State University Alumni Association, NAACP, The National Council of Negro Women, and The Urban League. She served the Dayton and Montgomery County community diligently until her death in 2012 at the age of 92.
